Margaret Mayo - Assistant Trainer in the Feldenkrais Method

At the conclusion of my training in January 1990 I opened a practice in the Feldenkrais Method in Sydney.

Previously I had worked as a Physiotherapist in the rehabilitation of people who had had insults to their nervous system. I had worked in large Rehabilitation facilities in Adelaide, tutored in the School of Physiotherapy at the University of SA and had run a private practice in the Neurological area.

As my Private Practice expanded, people who had what was termed ‘Musculo-skeletal’ injuries sought help. It quickly became clear to me that these people had difficulty with their self-organisation. Of course, the severity of their difficulties depended on the nature and extent of their injuries.

During 1997 I became an Assistant Trainer in the Feldenkrais Method. After that I worked in Training Programmes in Italy, The Netherlands, Switzerland, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia.

Now I teach four Awareness through Movement Classes per week to the public. I teach the same Class four times, adapting each class to what I see the students doing during the class.

There are essential ingredients when teaching Awareness through Movement Lessons. These range from the room where the class takes place to the Practitioner’s ability to sense the lesson in themselves. The Practitioner learns to describe the moves in such a way that the students can sense not only the move but the way in which it relates to their entire self.
