For Children with Disability

Home > Benefits > For Children with Disability

As a parent of a child with a disability, you are used to seeing your child struggle with his or her body. More than anything, you would love to see your child delighted by his own movement, and excited by her own learning.

Children love the gentle and playful modality of the Feldenkrais Method.

Children from as young as a few weeks old to teenagers can benefit. In fact, the younger the child, the more plastic their brain and, often, the more rapidly they improve.

Using movement and touch to work with the brain, Feldenkrais wakes up the learning mechanisms of the child, improving their self-

awareness and teaching them to move with greater ease and confidence.

A child learns to roll over, walk or play with a ball through curiosity and exploration, moving her body in many fun and varied ways. When a Feldenkrais Practitioner works with your child, he or she will use gentle, enjoyable and exploratory movements to tap into these natural learning processes.

Your child may not have discovered all the developmental stages of a typically developing child.  So your Feldenkrais Practitioner will facilitate his progression through these developmental stages whether your child is ten weeks old or ten years old.

Feldenkrais Practitioners frequently assist children with the following difficulties:

  • Cerebral Palsy

  • ADD/ADHD

  • Stroke and brain injury

  • Brachial plexus injury

  • Torticollis

  • Undiagnosed developmental delays

  • Genetic disorders (eg Down Syndrome)

  • Traumatic birth injury

  • Hypoxic brain damage

  • Multiple disabilities

  • Sensory Processing Difficulties

  • Autism spectrum disorders

  • Congenital hip dysplasia

  • Microcephaly and Hydrocephaly

  • Degenerative conditions such as muscular dystrophy

  • Spinal injuries and Spina Bifida

  • Hypotonia causing global developmental delay
