The Balance Master Series for Elder Citizens (transcript)
This set of transcripts are from a series of classes given to a group of twenty elder women participating in an Aged Care Study on Falls Prevention in the autumn of 1999.
The resource contrains the transcripts of 32 lessons plus foreward and introductory text.
Feldenkrais Practitioners Annie Cosgrove and Richard Yin created this program in 1999.They used the lessons to research the effect of Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement lessons on elderly citizens. With 32 lessons this is a comprehensive program (see below).
Participants were independent, community living individuals aged 65 to 85. While many had previous falls, some sustaining fractures of the wrist or ribs, none was using a walking aid. They were randomly assigned to one of three groups for 16 weeks. So they were given “no treatment”, Tai Chi or Feldenkrais.
Results of the clinical assessment showed the Feldenkrais group fared the best. They had statistically significant improvements in functional activity indices and functional balance testing. A subgroup of women fearful of falling were assessed. This group had a significant decline in their fears.
