About the event

Steeped in our bones is an evolutionary heritage that connects us to all life on Earth. In particular, the PRIMAL PATTERNS of our animal ancestors echo on in the footsteps of our here and now.

This workshop follows the unfolding developmental path humans undertake through the Primal Patterns of movement as tracked through our ancestral heritage.

There are 4 Primal Patterns of movement that were mastered by the animals in which we are apprenticed as we move from wriggling, crawling, to pulling ourselves to our feet and walking upright with the ability to scan the horizon at our full height.

These patterns are inbuilt and lived through our individual, personal growth in our lifetime. And they mimic the patterns of animal life on Earth attained over aeons. Thus, our personal journeys are chaperoned by the journeys of species through the depths of time.

"As individuals and as a species each of us carries a record of the evolutionary stages within. We don't just carry it, we live it from the moment of conception. We begin as single-cell creatures and during gestation we transition from invertebrate, to vertebrate, through fluid-dwelling and on to our births as air-breathing, land based mammals."  - Julie Peck & Leslie McLennan, Moving from the Inside Out, 2019

By experiencing cellular, spinal, homologous, homolateral and contralateral movements and inhabiting them, our sense of connection to our evolutionary past is rekindled. And with it a clearer, embodied sense of who and how we are now.

Inhabit the grace of the panther, the explosive power of the kangaroo, the certainty of the snake, the balance of the goanna, and the safety of the sea anemone in tracking back through our animal ancestry.

In a 3 hour experiential undertaking we will:

  • Examine examples of the 4 stages in animals
  • Revisit how we learned the stages in our infancy
  • Explore each of the stages using Feldenkrais Method® Awareness Through Movement® techniques
  • Broaden our movement options in the here and now,
  • Re-live the incredible journey that brought us to our feet.
  • Ground a theoretical deep time perspective into an experiential present.

Simon Slieker is a somatic educator and Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner whose work has an ecological focus. From his practice in the Victorian Otway region he hosts workshops and classes and works with individuals and teams to improve movement intelligence and lighten our collective footprint.

Simon also works as a wildlife guide in the Otways. From this vantage he observes many of our current marsupial 'kin' and their movement ways. This has contributed to learning from and opening up to an ecological movement perspective.
