- Functional Integration & Awareness Through Movement
Tanja de Langen is a Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner (CFP) since 1994, and has been a practising Physiotherapist since 1978. After attending a Feldenkrais workshop in 1986 Tanja knew instantly that she wanted to increase her knowledge of the method and assist others to transform their lives. Tanja has taught Awareness Through Movement (ATM) classes since graduating from the Feldenkrais Professional Training Program in 1994. She has practised as a CFP within a physiotherapy setting and as a private Feldenkrais practice. Tanja complements her Feldenkrais training with her experience as a physiotherapist.
The focus of Tanja’s work is function and movement education. Tanja helps people perform day to day tasks safely and with ease. She assists people to achieve their functional goals through education, building awareness and engaging people in a movement program that is meaningful and translates into improved ability to use their body. This may range from simple tasks such as getting out of bed, and sitting in a chair through to meal preparation, walking or playing a sport.
Tanja has many years of experience working as part of a team with allied health professionals and support staff. This includes teaching movement programs for families and support staff to implement, and she has monitored and adjusted these programs as required. When capacity building may not be possible she has good knowledge of assistive technology and can make recommendations when this may be a solution to a functional problem. To enhance learning, Tanja prefers to assist people in their usual environment so that she can understand a person’s environment and what they want to achieve in it, thus ensuring that her focus is personal centred and practical. Specifically Tanja has assisted people with Arthritic Conditions, Stroke, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease, Motor Neuron Disease, Huntington’s chorea, ABI, and Psychosocial Disability.
Tanja has skills and a special interest in coordinating services for people with complex social, medical and functional needs, ensuring that people are linked to the right services for them and that support provided is holistic and all people involved communicate and plan together.
“I find that Feldenkrais complements physiotherapy work and enables me to help other people to find their way out of pain and/or movement difficulties. They gain life-long skills which they can apply in many situations, be it pain management or to improve their ability to do what they love to do, such as walking, dancing, playing an instrument, playing with their children or pets, and simply enjoying a more mobile life. When I have been in a sticky situation myself, such as after injury, I know I have the resources within me (mind+ body) to explore to improve the situation --- Feldenkrais gives you a sense of hope, of possibilities you yourself can tap into.” Tanja de Langen
