The pelvic floor is mysterious to us till we become aware of problems "down there". Pregnancy and childbirth are well known to contribute to deterioration of the function of the pelvic floor. Incontinence, pain and prolapse being the well known big problems. Men having surgery and radiation treatment for Prostate cancer also have continence problems. Poor pelvic floor function also results in loss of power in daily activities and sport.

Perhaps you have tried pelvic floor exercises as prescribed by your physiotherapist or researched it yourself. The Feldenkrais approach to improving your pelvic floor is different. You gain a much deeper understanding of the parts of your pelvic floor and how to access them. Its slow and patient, giving you time to sense, imagine, access what it is, where it is, and how it works. Classes are done fully clothed mostly in lying and sitting. Feldenkrais gives you the tools to improve your awareness and knowledge of your pelvic area. The instruction "pull up your pelvic floor" will make infinitely more sense to you.

With Feldenkrais you learn the "how" to take into whatever pelvic floor exercise routine you want to do. Its having your own Personal Trainer for pelvic floor exercises.

INCONTINENCE

The pelvic floor is a sling of muscle which acts to hold up your abdominal contents. The bladder, prostate in men, vagina in women, and rectum are the lowest parts of the abdomen that sit just above the pelvic floor. When this sling of muscle loses its muscular tone then you can experience urinary and/or faecal incontinence and prolapse associated with these adjacent organs.

PROSTATE CANCER TREATMENT

Pelvic floor exercises are recommended pre and post surgery to improve urinary continence. It isn't just a woman's domain.

PELVIC POWER FOR MOVEMENT

The pelvic floor also functions to support the whole pelvis, your own internal girdle. It provides stability and strength to harness the power of the pelvis for strong functional movement. Without a good functioning pelvic floor you lack the foundation from which to harness the power of your pelvis. You need it to run, step, jump and transfer power from your pelvis to your legs and feet. You need that stable pelvis to support your spine, arms and head above. Losing power as you age is in part due to losing that strong functional pelvis and pelvic floor. If you run, golf, tennis, row, attend the gym and have experienced pregnancy and childbirth you would likely benefit from these classes.

PROLAPSE

Severe prolapse cannot be helped by pelvic floor awareness and retraining alone. Surgery is often required. Feldenkrais pelvic floor awareness can assist people who have had surgery and feel there is room for improvement. When the prolapse is minor, more like a feeling that things are pressing and wanting to fall through, a sense of pressure, these classes can help you manage that better.

SEX

Improve pelvic health and function and well,.. no promises but your sexual organs are all involved in your pelvic floor. Go figure.
