"Learning Difficulties at School"

A case study by a Feldenkrais Practitioner.

What exactly is meant by learning difficulties? I am referring to difficulty to read, write and perhaps do maths. i first became interested in the area when one of my children was disgnosed with a visual perceptual difficulty. A very specific difficulty which helped to make reading and spelling very difficult.

He says today that the help he was given through the Feldenkrais Method® then turned his life around. He has graduated from university and is working successfully as a professional.

The Feldenkrais Method® of body awareness, learning and movement has taught me more about how I learn and move myself. As a result, I have been able to use it successfully with many children in groups and one on one situations. The groups I've worked with have been taught a six-week program of "Awareness Through Movement" classes which were created by Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais and which I have adapted for children.

The number one need is to interest primary school children in their own amazing bodies, especially their skeletons and their muscles which their nervous systems can unite into a superb instrument of action. In this age of technology the children need to be reminded that their own bodies have the best technology of all and to respect it and keep it working well.

Some of the improvements the children were experiencing were: writing more effectively, sitting more comfortably to write, having less effort , more legibility and more speed in hand-writing.

George, a 7-year old who had difficulty sitting still to do his work is now calmer, does his homework more easily and has been promoted to the highest reading group at school. The Feldenkrais Method® helped George get there!
