Feldenkrais for Children - Feel-it-FUN Programs

Feel-it-Fun is a non drug therapy for children with Learning and Co-odrination Difficulties. For all ages from a few days old to adulthood.
We enhance learning by developing sensori-motor skills through efficient brain processing.

Progressive “Feel-it-FUN” programs have been designed by two innovative professional Perth women to help children develop better body sense and control, spatial (body position in space) awareness, listening skills, and skills in following instructions and problem solving.

The “Feel-it-FUN” program develops learning at a functional level. The child learns important concepts actively through his/her body. These lessons are designed to make the children think and hence develop their own problem solving skills. They are not just exercise classes or lessons to train children to do the tests. “Feel-it-FUN” programs develop many areas a of child’s brain-processing functions leading to the creation of new neural (brain) pathways. This leads to more organised brain patterns. This means there is less 'noise' in the brain allowing for clearer thought and better quality rest.

Linda Hardey, a physiotherapist and Gail Dawe a gymnastic, water safety and swimming teacher have drawn on their professional knowledge and experiences in working with children with learning problems, to design a program that will benefit children in the areas of movement organization and learning. They have both completed the Feldenkrais Professional Training Program and are both qualified and certified Feldenkrais Practitioners.

Feel-it-FUN is a quality cost-effective way for families to access the professional services their children need. It is based on the “Feldenkrais Method, applied neuroscience and our understanding of how children learn.”

“Feel-it-FUN” differs from other programs in that it takes a multidimensional approach to learning. It focuses on what the child can do and expands on those areas. Gail says ”It’s like doing a puzzle: if you just have a piece here and a piece there it doesn’t mean a whole lot to you. But what if you build on the piece you know and start to fill in around the edges? The picture then becomes clearer.” Hence the skills learned are based on a solid famliar foundation.

The focus is on having fun while you learn. It is not merely goal orientated. Reducing anxiety and fear of failure opens the childs mind to easier and quicker learning. The child is also more motivated to do the program as the lessons are fun. The aim is to develop the child as a whole being . These changes can be seen in social, behavioural, organisational, sporting and academic fields.

Prior to placement, each child is individually assessed to determine their appropriate Feel-it-FUN program. Each program is designed from the child’s initial video assessment and is periodically updated as skills improve.

Children who will benefit from these classes include those; who would like to improve their coordination and physical organization; children with learning and concentration difficulties and Attention Deficit Disorder (A.D.D.); Autistic children in mainstream education, babies/toddlers/children with delayed milestones ( eg.sitting, crawling, speaking, chewing, poor sleep patterns), particular behaviours that impacts negatively on their lives (too timid, too boistrious, always rushing, or other behavioural extremes), children who suffer from headaches connected with school-work (!), children who wish to enhance sporting or musical performance; children who spend more than two hours a day using a computer.
Any exaggerated posture used constantly puts stress on a developing body!

Gail said 25% of children have learning difficulties or A.D.D.
Linda said our success rate is extremely high and every child shows improvement.
